Dhansak (Dansak) is a tangy spice mix made up of popular flavours including fenugreek seeds, amchoor, cumin, coriander and cayenne chilli. It is a popular Indian spice blend from the Parsi region, where elements of Persian and Gujarati cuisine are fused together.
Dhansak is a signature dish of the Parsi community and it reflects their culinary traditions and heritage. It’ll often be prepared for special occasions and festive celebrations such as a wedding or a religious ceremony. The Parsi community are descendants of Persian Zoroastrians who settled in India during the late 8th century.
Dhansak is a hot and sour curry that is typically made by cooking goat or mutton, with a mixture of lentils and vegetables. It was developed to make expensive cuts of meat go further by mixing with cheaper ingredients like lentils and pulses. We really enjoyed making and eating this Chicken Dhansak recipe.
This spice blend infuses into the strew as it simmers, enhancing the flavours and aroma of the dish. This curry works well with chicken (follow our recipe here or on back of the pack), alternatively, replace the meat with mushrooms for a vegetarian/vegan version.
