West Indian Curry Powder, West Indies Curry Powder or Jamaican Curry Powder, is a sweet, citrusy spice mix with peppery notes. The use of curry powder in Caribbean cuisine can be traced directly back to the arrival of Indian immigrants to the region during the 19th and early 20th century. The Caribbean at this time had a large labour shortage but strong trade links to the Indian subcontinent, meaning many workers made the move across the world. They brought with them their culinary traditions, including plenty of spices, which have heavily influenced the cuisine of the region.
This spice mix adds a bold, complex flavour to meat, fish and vegetable-based curries. Combine the spices with 1 tablespoon oil, 2 garlic cloves and coconut milk to make a paste for a flavourful Caribbean curry.
Typically, Caribbean food has a spicy reputation! This West Indian Curry Powder is considered a mild curry powder. However, it can easily be spiced up with the addition of fresh chillies or by adding our Birds Eye Chillies!
Not only does it taste good, but this curry powder can be considered healthy, too! Ingredients such as turmeric contain curcumin which is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
