Goan Xacuti is a powerful Indian spice mix. It contains 14 ingredients including poppy seeds, ajowan, fenugreek and cinnamon. Perfect with beef, lamb and fish, Goan Xacuti is hot with a subtle sweetness.
This curry blend is used to make the traditional Xacuti curry. In Goa, a local fisherman would catch a fish or buy a local chicken. They would then prepare the sauce to serve it with.
Like many dishes in Goa, Goan Xacuti is heavily influenced by Portuguese cuisine due to colonisation. In Portugal, the dish is called ‘chacuti’.
This spice mix is featured in Delia Smith’s cookbook How to Cheat at Cooking on page 143. The recipe is for Goan Lamb Xacuti and includes both Tamarind and Goan Xacuti.
