Dhansak is a tangy spice mix made up of popular flavours including fenugreek seeds, amchoor, cumin, coriander and cayenne chilli. It is a popular Indian spice blend from the Parsi region, where elements of Persian and Gujarati cuisine are fused together.

Dhansak is a hot and sour curry that is typically made by cooking goat or mutton, with a mixture of lentils and vegetables. It was developed to make expensive cuts of meat go further by mixing with cheaper ingredients like lentils and pulses.

This curry works well with chicken (follow our recipe here or on back of the pack), alternatively, replace the meat with mushrooms for a vegetarian/vegan version.

Five stars all the way since I first started using Seasoned Pioneers

I cannot think of using any other producer’s spice blends. Have been using seasoned pioneers ever since I moved to France

I love dhansak, it’s my favourite but have never made it myself. This spice mix is perfect with a lovely spicy kick.

Chicken dhansak is my takeaway favourite and I was keen to see if I could make it at home, I followed the very helpful recipe on the back of the packet with the addition of a chicken stock pot and wow what a result, very tasty and just the absolute perfect level of heat. As good if not nicer due to a fresher taste than my local curry house and a million times better than those sauces in a jar, all made in just over 30mins. Yum

When living in the UK I used to by the individual seeds to mix my own curry powders. This is not possible here so your Dhansak Blend is
perfect – I know – I cooked Chicken Dhansak last night. There are wonderful spice stalls in the markets here but all the grains and powders are e
exposed to the open air, and one has no idea for how long they have been “hanging around”. You re doing a great job. !

I made a traditional chicken dhansak using a Pat Chapman recipe, it was fantastic
