Black Cumin Seeds (Kala Jeera)

Black Cumin Seeds, also known as kala jeera, have a distinctive, warm flavour. Native to Europe, Africa and Asia, black cumin has a slightly mellower, tarter flavour in comparison to white cumin.

Smaller and darker than their cousin, the white cumin seed, Black Cumin Seeds are often used in combination with other spices such as coriander and fennel to create complex spice blends. Over thousands of years, have been used for medicinal purposes. It’s believed they have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-boosting properties, as well as anti-cancer properties that may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Although not as common as white cumin, north India utilises black cumin in many of its regional dishes. Try in curries, rice dishes like biryani and in traditional Indian breads where you would usually use white cumin. The seeds are typically dry fried to really heighten their flavour.
